Yariv Alter Fin 1968-2007
Yariv Alter Fin, artist, teacher, musician, “visual phylosopher”, died on tuesday 28.08.2007, in israel, in the age of 39. i got to know him personaly in amsterdam, long after growing up on the music of his and ronen hoffman’s DXM. it was while working with maya cohen on her movie “simon says”, in which he played a small roll (besides supporting every little bit of this production..) i wouldnt exadurate if i’d say i fell in love with him. he was an inspiring, kind, funny, super talented person. i and many many others will miss him a lot. may he rest in peace.

shootings of Friedemann Hottenbacher’s ‘Die Heimkehr’ were practically finished last week, after a 3 week production in Japan and a weekend in Wiesebaden and Bacharach. this project started exactly one year ago, and followed the last year of Friedemann’s parents, german who imigrated to Japan 49 years ago on a mission to “seed” there new christian communities. last week, after half a decade, they came back to Germany.
and 2 days ago i met the probably most famous character in Germany: KNUT. yes, yes. THE Knut, the polar white ice bear. after letting him chewing, grazing, licking and stroking my arms, legs, and other parts of my body and the cloth on them, i decided to collect my tax and stragled to get my picture with him, something to show to my grandchildren. it was part of the shooting for VOX’s Wissenshumger about “what eats Knust”. indeed, very interesting.

so much time without an update. well well. where have i been, what have i done. . . August: Marzipan was finalized on a DaVinci system in amsterdam, premiered there a while after and found distributer in California!
September: 10 days shoot of a 30min. documentary for 3sat, about Bloggers, pod- and videocasters with Friedemann Hottenbacher (Dir.)
October saw yet another interesting and brave act of no-budget short film production, with Dir. Lisa Wallmann’s “Tiefer als der Tag”. 16mm, shot in Ruegen. Right after, i found myself in Rhode Island, USA, chasing extremely big fires in a “disadter lab”, together with Marcel Weingaertner (Dir.) and Robert Coellen (1st camera), followed by a long weekend in NYC with *Sue!
November was dedicated to some smaller scale TV pieces with werwiewas, and .. making music (hmm.. should this be blogged somewhere else)
December – off to the middle-east to do the Israel-chunk of shooting for Ayelet Bargur’s “Ahavah” full length docu/drama project, which attends to come back to a very last set in berlin later this spring.
what else.. Just Married took 1st prize in Romania , invited to Delhi, and goes next to Rotterdam!
* if you’re fast enough (1 day left), you might catch Sue de Beer’s The quickening NYC (check the photos in this link! pretty amazing installation)
now i go and move my flat , see you later..
Love! and happy new year to who ever reads this!!!

Nemesis wrapped in Italy about 2 weeks ago. i was called to operate 2nd camera and make some lighting for DP Henning Brümmer, on this low budget production that took place in Castel di Tora, a village in the near of Rome.
Nicole Mosleh, first time full-length feature Director, wrote this wonderful psycho-thriller script and recruited a genius cast of Susanne Lothar and Ulrich Mühe (“Funny Games”, “Das Leben der Anderen”). We’ve accomplished that in 2 weeks of shoot.
and.. in 3 weeks im off to Tokyo, with Friedemann Hottenbacher and Gregor Streiber (werwiewas) to document Max Raabe’s tour in Japan.
and… somebody in Munich filmfestival got so excited by Fliegende Ratten,
that he invited us to finally world premiere it in the German Cinema competition, July 2006. Only left to figure out is, how to lay this digital cinemascopic piece on a 35mm film. Hint – 20,000€ . If anyone knows of some, please give me a call.

We were experimenting with different (35mm, HD and DV) formats, shooting and processing with high-end post production tools, watching some films and sharing thoughts and ideas.
All and all.. wonderful experience!
